Scout: The Iconic American SUV Makes Its Grand Return Under Volkswagen

Originally launched in 1961 by International Harvester, the Scout is often regarded as the first-ever SUV. After being discontinued in 1980, this rugged vehicle became an American icon. Now, under the Volkswagen umbrella, the Scout brand is making a comeback with two fully electric models: the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck. Both are set to debut in 2027 in the United States.

En 2027, Scout reviendra en Amérique avec deux modèles. Le SUV Traveler et le pick-up Terra.

The Return of the Iconic Scout SUV and Pickup

In 1961, International Harvester, a company known for agricultural machinery and tractors, introduced the Scout. Designed as a versatile, off-road vehicle, the Scout quickly became a competitor to the Jeep CJ and the Land Rover Defender. Available in various body styles, including a pickup and both soft-top and hardtop versions, it was powered by powerful V8 engines. The model ran until 1980, with over 500,000 units sold, and remains a cult favorite in North America, alongside its main rival, the Ford Bronco.

Volkswagen Revives the Scout Brand

In 2020, Volkswagen acquired Navistar, the successor of International Harvester, which included the rights to the Scout name. This acquisition went largely unnoticed by the public, but Volkswagen saw it as an opportunity to strengthen its position in the U.S. market. In 2022, Volkswagen revealed plans to resurrect the Scout brand, unveiling sketches of two models inspired by the original Scout. According to Herbert Diess, former CEO of Volkswagen, this move is aimed at capitalizing on the growing electric vehicle (EV) market in the U.S., particularly in the highly competitive SUV and pickup segments.

Scout Becomes an Independent Brand Under Volkswagen

Volkswagen intends for Scout to operate as a distinct brand within its group, focusing on producing rugged, all-electric vehicles. In 2023, Volkswagen hired Chris Benjamin, a former designer at Stellantis (known for Dodge, Jeep, and Ram), to oversee the design of the new models. Volkswagen also partnered with Magna-Steyr to develop a dedicated electric platform for Scout, with a budget of 450 million euros allocated for the project.

Two Models Set for 2027

The first two electric vehicles from Scout, the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup, will be produced starting in 2026, with a market launch slated for 2027. Both models will share the same electric platform, designed for durability with a body mounted on a traditional ladder-frame chassis. The Scout vehicles will feature a rigid rear axle, enhancing their off-road capabilities.

While the exact dimensions are still undisclosed, Scout has confirmed that both models will have over 30 cm of ground clearance and will be capable of wading through water up to one meter deep. Additionally, they will offer a payload of 900 kg, with the Terra pickup boasting a towing capacity of over 4.5 tons and the Traveler SUV able to tow up to 3.2 tons.

Design Inspired by the Original Scout

The design of the new Scout vehicles will evoke the rugged, utilitarian style of the original models. Chris Benjamin, the head of design, emphasized that a Scout vehicle must first and foremost be a practical companion for its owner. As such, both the Traveler and Terra will feature a robust, no-frills design, including a reduced front overhang, balanced proportions, a horizontal hood, and a vertical front end. The rear cabin will be pushed back, lending the vehicles a dynamic appearance, even when stationary. The bumpers are clearly separated from the body to emphasize the vehicles’ rugged, off-road character.

Both vehicles will sport clean, minimalist lines, free from unnecessary adornments such as chrome or plastic cladding. The Terra pickup will have a bed measuring nearly 1.7 meters in length, while the Traveler will proudly display a spare tire on its rear hatch. The models will feature a blacked-out front and rear sections as a nod to the original Scout’s design. A modern LED light signature, reminiscent of the equator wrapping around the Earth, will add a contemporary touch to the classic look.

A Blend of Modern Features and Rugged Simplicity

Comme le pick-up Terra, le Scout Traveler annonce une garde au sol généreuse de plus de 30 cm.

Inside, the Scout Traveler will combine ruggedness with modern luxury, offering a connected, warm cabin. The dashboard will be horizontal, with a digital display and a large touchscreen in the center. Physical toggle switches will allow users to control essential functions like climate control. The Traveler will feature an imposing center console with ample storage between the front seats, and the Terra pickup will offer an optional front bench for three passengers.

Both models will come with the latest technology and connectivity features, including over-the-air updates. The rear passenger areas of both models will be spacious, capable of comfortably accommodating large passengers. Additionally, the vehicles will feature a spacious front trunk for added storage.

Electric Powertrains and Advanced Features

Although full technical details are still scarce, the Scout vehicles will be powered by dual electric motors (one on each axle) for all-wheel-drive capability. While the total power output has not yet been revealed, Scout has confirmed a remarkable 1,355 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicles to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.

Both the Traveler and Terra will use an 800V architecture, supporting a maximum charging capacity of 350 kW. The vehicles will also offer bidirectional charging (V2L), allowing owners to power external devices. The Terra pickup will feature a 240V socket in the bed, enabling users to charge tools or even household appliances. Both models will have an estimated range of over 560 km, with an optional gasoline-powered generator for an extended range, allowing the vehicles to travel up to 800 km on a single charge.

Exclusive to North America

The Scout Traveler and Terra will be manufactured in a new factory in South Carolina, with a planned production capacity of 150,000 units per year. Initially, the vehicles will be available exclusively in North America (United States and Canada). The entry-level price for both models is expected to be under $60,000 (approximately €55,000). While deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, customers can already place a reservation with a $100 deposit.
