Mazda 6e: RWD EV Liftback with 50-Inch Screen

Published:

The Mazda 6e Is A Gorgeous RWD EV Liftback With A 50-Inch Virtual Screen

Mazda makes a notable entrance into the electric sedan segment with the new Mazda 6e, marking a significant evolution from its first electric venture, the MX-30 EV. This rear-wheel drive (RWD) sedan represents a thoughtful approach from the Japanese manufacturer, featuring a perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution that caters to sports sedan enthusiasts.

As the electric successor to the iconic Mazda 6, this new model will initially launch in Europe, while the US market remains on hold. Interestingly, the Mazda 6e shares its foundation with the Chinese Mazda EZ-6, itself derived from the Deepal SL03, demonstrating a strategy focused on cost optimization and accelerated development.

Sophisticated Electric Architecture

The Mazda 6e offers two distinct battery options, each with specific advantages. The version equipped with a 68.8 kWh LFP battery stands out for its rapid charging and durability, while the 80 kWh NCM variant prioritizes range. The WLTP figures are impressive: 297 miles for the LFP version and 343 miles for the NCM battery.

Performance-wise, the rear motor delivers 254 hp in the LFP version and 241 hp for the NCM, both sharing identical torque of 236 lb-ft. The LFP version reaches 62 mph in 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 108 mph. Charging capabilities are particularly noteworthy: up to 200 kW DC for the LFP version and 95 kW for the NCM, complemented by 11 kW AC charging.

Despite a substantial weight of 4,303 lbs for the standard version and 4,305 lbs for the extended range version, with each battery weighing 1,058 lbs, the LFP technology appears to offer the best compromise. Its ability to charge to 100% without significant degradation and superior charging speed make it a particularly attractive option.

Modern Design and High-Tech Interior

With its generous dimensions (193.7 inches long, 84.8 inches wide with mirrors, 58.7 inches high) and 113.9-inch wheelbase, the Mazda 6e commands presence on the road. Storage space is well-considered, with an 11.6 cubic feet trunk complemented by a 2.4 cubic feet frunk.

The cabin distinguishes itself with a decidedly technological approach. The impressive 50-inch virtual head-up display leads the way, while the 10.2-inch dashboard and 14.6-inch central touchscreen provide a modern and intuitive interface. Rear passengers even benefit from a dedicated touchscreen for climate control.

The absence of physical buttons for climate and audio controls reflects a minimalist approach, offset by a well-designed central console integrating cup holders, smartphone supports, and storage spaces. Externally, the illuminated grille, black wheel arches suggesting a crossover stance, and retractable electric spoiler create a distinctive visual signature, all mounted on 19-inch wheels.

Cutting-Edge Safety and Driving Dynamics

The Mazda 6e aims for excellence in safety, with design oriented toward achieving five Euro NCAP stars. Safety equipment is comprehensive: nine airbags, i-Activesense ADAS system, seat occupancy monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, and a complete suite of driving assistance features.

The onboard surveillance technology combines M-pixel cameras, millimeter-wave radars, and ultrasonic sensors for constant environmental awareness. The 50:50 weight distribution, coupled with sophisticated suspension (multi-link rear, MacPherson front), promises an engaging driving experience.

A Highly Anticipated Arrival

The Mazda 6e will debut in Europe this summer, marking a new era for the Japanese manufacturer in the premium electric sedan segment. While pricing remains to be confirmed, this model represents a promising evolution in Mazda’s electric lineup, combining cutting-edge technology, balanced performance, and refined design.
